Where’s your point of focus? This has cropped up a lot for me this week.
Firstly I use the ‘point of focus’ in class when talking about balance. It really helps perform balance exercises when you can focus on one point and I was chatting about this with some of the JTP family on Friday. All agreeing how much better their balance is when they have a point of focus.
However, do we have a point of focus for the mind? Or in life? I think we do, we will have a point of focus which can grow and grow in our body and mind. It could be something we want to change, it might be creating upset in our lives, making us feel sad, angry or generally fed up. It could start to wake us up in the middle of the night, make us fidgety during the day, stopping us from being able to concentrate and get things done.
If this is happening then it is time to change or move the point of focus. Easier said than done … maybe, but if your point of focus is creating negative thoughts and feelings and affecting your health then why wouldn't you want to change, and it is possible to change.
How to start? Pause, breathe and move your point of focus on. It’s changing how we look at a situation, nothing in reality changes, but you change the way your brain views the reality.
Sharing a personal point of focus. If I get an email from someone wanting to leave us and that means leaving the Jane Thomas Pilates family, I can go through all the feelings as described above — because this becomes my point of focus. I will worry and analyse what I am doing, and this can grow inside me. However, if I practice taking some time out to pause, breathe and focus on the people who continue to come to classes who tell me how much they love what we
do, I am changing my point of focus. I haven’t changed the reality which is someone leaving us, but I have changed how my brain views that reality, and this point of focus is more positive, and results in a better, healthier, me.
Practise the pause, breathe and moving your point of focus and change the way your brain is viewing your reality.
