I love this quote from Maya Angelou. It rings true for me, good and bad. Often when recounting a story or an event we often can’t remember the words that were said, we often can’t remember what happened precisely, but we always remember how it made us feel.
For example after watching a comedian, we can’t repeat the jokes or the stories or what they did, but we remember how happy we felt.
OR being on the phone trying to sort a problem, we remember how the person dealing with the problem makes us feel without necessarily remembering what they did or what they said.
OR at times of worry and sadness, if someone takes the time to be kind, gives us time, we may not remember the exact words or what they did, but we will remember how we felt as a result.
If this is how we are and what we remember, then we can give that to others. Instead of worrying about finding the right words, worrying about what to do, finding a solution, we simply need to be present, give time, listen, be there and available. This is what makes the difference, this is what is remembered, how we make them feel.
