Watching my granddaughter Adie look at herself in our full length mirror made me smile this week. I watched her examining herself, going closer to the mirror and placing her hands on it so she could get really close up. She seemed to be there for ages, sticking her tongue out, moving her head over to one side then the other. Then she started to swivel on her feet and legs, then she started to laugh, not just giggle but really laugh out loud, splitting your sides laughter. I started to ask her
what was funny, what are you laughing at? She didn’t answer me, but suddenly she just went right up to the mirror and gave herself a kiss.
It made me think of all the times I have looked in the mirror and reflect on what I have seen and what I have told myself … not liking my hair, not liking the shape of my bottom, seeing the wrinkles, looking at my crooked face, not liking a particular outfit on me, not wanting to see my knees … Goodness the list could go on.
I’m guessing that at some earlier point though I did exactly what my 2 year old granddaughter did.
Everything about what she did is positive, it felt like she really looked at herself, loved what she saw and had a good laugh with herself.
When did we lose the ability to see ourselves reflected back and actually like what we see? We suddenly become judgemental of ourselves, as if we haven’t quite met up to our own expectations in how we look, some aspects of our appearance, our body shape, our face, what we are wearing.
I really hope, and I am going to encourage her to keep looking and keep giving her reflection a kiss, because I want her to truly love herself and never lose it. Try it this week, try looking in a full length mirror and instead of being critical of yourself, find the things you love … change the words you use around what you see. Instead of looking at my wrinkles and thinking about how they age me, those wrinkles are a reflection of lots of laughing, lots of enjoying life. I want you all to
be more Adie over the next week.
PS I know when you see me next time you will all be looking for my ‘crooked face’ 🤣👏. And that’s fine …
