How has your week been with those Everyday Essentials from last week, and have you been successful in drinking more water?
Let’s be honest: how many times have you thought, If I drink more water, I’ll spend my day (and night) running to the loo!”?
It’s a common worry, especially as we get older, and in worse cases
people can feel like they have to plan all their trips around toilet stops.
But let’s change the narrative around those toilet trips, because they are actually a great thing? It’s when keeping hydrated is working behind the scenes to keep you healthy.
1. The Truth About Toilets
When you first start to drink more water, it will probably mean more trips to the loo. But every visit is a sign that
your body is doing its job. Water is the ultimate cleaner for your insides, flushing out the toxins and waste your body doesn’t need. Think of it as giving your internal pipes a good rinse.
Your bladder can hold about 400–600ml of urine (roughly two cups full). But most of us feel the urge to go when it’s only half full. So don’t worry — if when you start drinking more water — it’s completely normal to feel like you’re heading to the
bathroom a bit more often. Gradually — as you start to increase your fluid intake — your body will start to adjust.
Instead of seeing it as an inconvenience, think of it this way — each trip is your body giving you a little wellness boost.
2. Hydration and UTIs: The Connection You Need to Know
Staying hydrated doesn’t just flush out toxins — it can also help prevent urinary tract infections
(UTIs).
UTIs often happen when bacteria hang out in the bladder for too long. By drinking enough water, you’re effectively washing out your bladder regularly, giving those bacteria less time to settle in and cause trouble.
In fact, a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine (Journal of the American Medical Association) found that women who drank an extra 1.5 litres of water per day significantly reduced
their risk of recurrent UTIs. That’s just a few extra glasses of water — an easy win for your health!
So, while you might be visiting the loo more often, think of those trips as your body’s way of saying thanks for looking after me!
3. How to Stay Hydrated Without Feeling Overwhelmed
Now I understand that natural water isn’t everyone’s favourite drink of the day, so if this is you don’t worry — here are
some simple ways to keep your hydration on point:
- Sip, Don’t Gulp: spread your water intake throughout the day. This will help avoid the I need the loo NOW feeling
- Make It Fun: add slices of lemon, cucumber, or berries to your water for a refreshing twist, or even some natural juice to give it some flavour
- Keep It Handy: a
pretty water bottle can be a great reminder to drink up.
Plus, drink water earlier in the day to help avoid those midnight bathroom visits.
4. A New Way to Think About Hydration
Changing habits can feel like a trial, but by focusing on the fact that every glass of water is a little act of self-care is a bonus and is achievable. Your body is about 60% water, and staying hydrated helps everything
from your skin to your energy levels, digestion, and even joint health.
So, next time you’re tempted to skip that glass of water because you don’t want another trip to the loo, remember that every sip is helping your body sparkle from the inside out. Now consider those trips to the bathroom as your body giving you a little pat on the back for a job well done.
Here’s to hydration, and keeping our minds and bodies in a healthier, happy place. Now, go grab a
glass of water 😉
Have a great week — keep looking, moving and feeling good.
With love
