The idea of "first steps" is so rich with emotion, vulnerability, excitement, and growth, and this week, I had the absolute joy of seeing my youngest granddaughter take her first steps. Those wobbly, determined, heart-melting little movements that mark the beginning of a whole new chapter.
If you’ve ever watched a child take those first
steps, you’ll know the mix of emotions it brings: joy, wonder, maybe a tiny lump in the throat as you realise just how quickly they’re growing. But what struck me most was how unbothered she was by the occasion. No overthinking. No second-guessing. Just up she got, had a little wobble, and off she toddled, wide-eyed and ready to explore her world from a new perspective.
And it got me thinking — we’re all taking first steps all the time, no matter how old we
are.
- it might be the first steps into retirement…
- the first steps back into a class after time away…
- the first steps towards a healthier routine…
- the first time picking up some small hand weights …
- or even the first time saying no to something that doesn’t serve you anymore.
Every first step takes a bit of courage. Sometimes it’s exciting, sometimes nerve-wracking, sometimes both. But each one opens up new
possibilities. And, just like my granddaughter, we don’t need to have everything figured out. We just need to try.
In Pilates, I see this all the time — clients taking first steps to rebuild strength, to reconnect with their bodies, to trust movement again after injury or illness. And every small step matters.
So wherever you are in your life right now, maybe just pause and ask:
🦶 What first step am I ready to
take?
🧡 What might open up for me if I give it a go?
Sometimes the smallest steps lead to the biggest changes. And like my granddaughter, maybe we don’t need to wait until we’re ready — maybe we just need to wobble a bit, smile, and keep going.
So lets all take a quiet moment and ask ourselves…
“Where in my life am I ready to take a first step?”
It might be something big or something
beautifully small — either way, how would it feel to move forward gently, with curiosity instead of pressure?
Maybe write it down, say it out loud, or simply notice the answer when it rises. Your first step doesn’t have to be perfect — it just needs to happen.
Have a great week everyone — keep looking, moving, and feeling good.
With love and support,
Jane xxx
