The Jane Thomas Pilates Newsletter
Hello ,

I would like to be celebrating the start of all our new courses of classes, but unfortunately for me it was a bit of a false start! On Friday I was looking forward to teaching my new Pilates routine to my lovely classes at Old Woodhouse… But this wasn’t to be.

An accident on the motorway between junction 22 and junction 23 had occurred and both junctions were closed, which meant that traffic around Loughborough was at a standstill. I sat in my car in a queue for just over an hour. First of all waiting in one direction, then when I realised I wasn’t going to get to class I turned my car around and proceeded to sit in another queue to return home. Keith then had the task of contacting everyone to let them know what had happened.

I definitely would not have managed to get there for the 9.30am class, but possibly could have continued my journey to teach the 10.30am class, but judging how long it had taken me to get home I may not even have made it for 10.30am… So a false start it was, I’m afraid. So big apologies to everyone who attends my Friday morning classes, but rest assured that no-one will have been as disappointed as me, as I absolutely hate having to cancel, specially when it is for something completely out of my control. I promise that I will make it up to you over the next few weeks!

Have a fabulous week everyone — looking, moving and feeling great!

Catchups for Matwork Classes — Please Read
The new courses bring some changes to our Catchups booking system. For new clients, let me explain what Catchups are.

Catchups are our gift to you all. They are the means by which you can book a replacement class when you know you will have to miss your regular class — say if you have an appointment with your gp, or your upcoming holiday.

We provide a link — at the bottom of each week's Newsletter — for this purpose, as well as at the bottom of our website. All you have to do is fill in the information the form on the link asks you for:
  • Who you are
  • The class you will miss
  • Which alternative classes you would like
It's all very easy and it all works very well. We pay our Glamorous Assistant Karen to run the Catchups system on our behalf, so you will get an email from her shortly after receiving your request (possibly 24 hours or so) to arrange your Catchup class.

PLEASE NOTE: Even if you do not want a Catchup for one of your missed classes, please still use the link to let us know, so that Karen can allocate your space for others who do want a Catchup. This way everyone can benefit from the Catchups system.

As you can imagine, this takes quite a lot of work on Karen's part so is obviously expensive for us to run, but we have always felt that if you are committed enough to get to your Pilates class every week, then we should be committed enough to accommodate you with an alternative if you cannot get to your regular class.

However, it has become rather unwieldy and expensive to run of late, and we have been forced to consider whether we can continue to run the Catchups system at all, or whether we just have to stop it.

Now, cancelling it is definitely not what we want, but in order to keep offering you all this valuable free gift we do need to change it just a little. So as of our new year's courses starting now we have to stipulate a couple of things to help us make it viable once again. These changes are:
  • Catchups can no longer run over from course-to-course. Previously we allowed this, but in some instances the Catchups list that Karen maintains became overloaded. This change will not be an issue to anyone with just a little planning, simply making sure you book far enough in advance of your missed class
  • Unless you give sufficient alternative classes you can get to, then we may not be able to offer you a Catchup at all. We now have 24 matwork classes each week, and many of these are very busy classes with few unfilled spaces, so if you only offer one specific class for your alternative then we may not be able to accommodate your request if that class is already full. Karen will always be able to offer you other alternatives to your request in one of the other 20+ classes, but if you choose not to accept her suggestions in such a case then we are afraid we may not be able to offer you a Catchup at all. Again, this is simply not an issue if you give Karen a wide choice of alternative classes in the first place
  • Finally, previously we have offered people the chance to take a Catchup Reformer Pilates class in lieu of 2 matwork classes. We will no longer be able to offer this as an alternative.

Overall these are actually very minor changes to what is a fantastic free system for you all to continue to ensure you get to a weekly Pilates class. However, we know that you will understand these very minor Catchups system changes are absolutely necessary to help us keep offering the free service at all. We prefer to offer this free gift to everyone in a way that is sustainable, rather than having to stop it altogether. We know you will agree.
Exercise Of The Week
Double Leg Stretch is this week’s Exercise Of The Week. In the video I demonstrate this exercise starting at an Improvers Level 1 position, both legs floating, and progressing it to Level 2. If you are relatively new to this exercise or you are having a few niggles with your back at the moment, then start with just one leg floating, or even both feet on the floor — focusing on keeping the deep stomach muscles switched on to support and maintain your neutral spine position as you are moving your arms.

Practise this exercise every day this week, work at the appropriate level for your body and feel your body getting stronger.

Feel the difference, move differently, and look more balanced.

Your Whole Self
I am in the zone of empowerment this week as I am watching and totally hooked on the Paralympics in Rio.

I spend a mixed amount of time between crying at individuals' stories, then overwhelming joy when they achieve their goal of becoming a Paralympian.

It is a clear demonstration of what can be done and achieved if you make a choice, take responsibility, and then take action — no excuses, no blame.

This week my goal is to get my body back to exercising, eating more healthily, and drinking more water — and I am going to take responsibility for this — I will not make the excuse that there isn’t enough time to exercise, I will shop only for food that gives me energy and good nutrition, and I will drop that second cup of coffee a day and replace it with a glass of water.

After all, this is nothing compared to the choices and actions the Paralympians have to make hundreds of times a day, so I am pretty sure I can do it…

What about you? What action will you take this week to help you achieve your goals?

All matwork and Reformer classes are back in operation as of this week, and the summer seems just like a distant memory...

Also, all classes are in their normal venues, and at their normal day and time.

Book a Catchup

If you know you will have to miss a class in your course for any reason, and would like to book a space in another class instead, just follow the link to book it.

Simply tell us the class you will miss and —most important — please give us as many alternatives as possible. If you only give us one alternative, we cannot guarantee you will get a Catchup.

Please also let us know if you will miss your class but don't want a Catchup — the whole Catchup system relies on knowing when spaces will occur.
