Healthy Backs Masterclass news

The Jane Thomas Pilates Newsletter
Hello
The Healthy Backs Masterclass on 26th November is now full. I have limited the numbers in this class for obvious reasons, so that I can ensure good technique and practice is happening with each and everyone of you, and so that I can spend some time with each individual.

However, for those who did want to come but were a bit slow in responding to the Newsletter last week, let us know if you want a space, we can put your name on a waiting list, because inevitably we do get cancellations as we get nearer the date plus it will tell me how many of you want a more specific programme and we can put on another Masterclass on another day, for those who miss out this time.

The other great bit of news, is that this week we were assessed as a Training Provider for our Pilates Instructor Level 3 Award and we have passed with full approval. So we will be going ahead in the new year and offering this training, initially to a small group of our own clients.

For those who responded to the initial enquiry to train as Pilates teachers with us, we will be in touch very shortly with more information.
Have a fantastic week folks, keep looking, moving and feeling great.

Exercise Of The Week
I am spoiling you this week, as I am sending you two exercises relating to my ongoing focus on posture.

Lots of you tell me that you feel tension and tightness in the neck if you are lifting heavy objects, or just generally as you are sitting or moving throughout the day. This is because of weaknesses in the muscles that support the shoulder girdle but also an overuse of muscles that are trying to work in isolation because other muscles aren’t pulling their weight… quite literally!

So try both of these exercises. The first shows a method of trying to feel those muscles in the upper back working, the second is a classic Pilates exercise — the Swan Dive — one of my favourite exercises.

My advice this week is to feel the movement as if it is the first time you have performed it, so you really focus on the correct muscles doing the job.

Work at the appropriate level for your body and please DO NOT work through pain. The first exercise is here and the second exercise is here.

Your Whole Self
What's the difference between doing and being? And are you spending most of your time doing and not being?

Purposeful doing is used by the mind to achieve a state of being. Automatic doing is used by the mind to reflect a state of being.

What the blazes am I going on about? Well, here are some examples of what I mean by this:
  • We may read a book in order to feel more relaxed — purposeful doing = reading the book, to achieve a state of being = relaxed
  • We may laugh or smile or feel amused = automatic doing, which reflects a state of being = happiness.

In order for us to live a happier more fulfilled life we need to focus more on the being than the doing. The doing should be flowing out of our state of being, because after all we are Human Beings not Human Doings.

So this week’s challenge is for you to think about the things you do every day and whether you are doing or being. As you do things, start to recognise how it makes you feel. Start to recognise the feelings, start to recognise the being and start to increase and focus on this.

Achieve more balance between your doing and your being, and welcome the challenge of living a happier, calmer, more relaxed life.

Book a Catchup

If you know you will have to miss a class in your course for any reason, and would like to book a space in another class instead, just follow the link to book it.

Simply tell us the class you will miss and —most important — please give us as many alternatives as possible. If you only give us one alternative, we cannot guarantee you will get a Catchup.

Please also let us know if you will miss your class but don't want a Catchup — the whole Catchup system relies on knowing when spaces will occur.
