A Pilates Celebration

The Jane Thomas Pilates Newsletter
Hello
On Sunday 7th May it was International Pilates Day — which is a day when the Pilates Community around the world has the opportunity to unite and celebrate Joseph Hubertus Pilates and what his exercise programme gave to the world.

It was Joseph's innovative approach to exercise and health that developed when he was interned during the First World War, where he nursed the ill and injured. He attached springs to hospital beds so that his patients could tone their muscles as they recovered in bed. These prototype contraptions later developed into the Pilates machines that can now be found in specialised Pilates Studios around the world.

In 1923 he moved to the US and opened his first studio in New York. His work was an instant hit with dancers who needed help recovering from injury, this spread to sports men and women as he helped them build strength whilst protecting the damaged area. Joseph believed totally in the mind, body connection approach to health and wellbeing

“It is the mind itself which builds the body”.

I love to celebrate on this day, because I truly believe that Pilates changed my life and for that Joseph, I will be forever grateful.
Have a fantastic week folks — keep looking, moving and feeling great.

PS. One of our very own JTP family is taking part in the MoonWalk in London this coming weekend, and she is raising money for the charity Walk the Walk, supporting vital Breast Cancer causes. If you want to support Cara with some sponsorship (please do) just follow this link to donate.

Exercise Of The Week
The Exercise of the Week this week is a Joseph Pilates classic, taught the Jane Thomas Pilates way.

It is a Double Leg Stretch — I show the build up from level 1 and beyond in the video so please work at the appropriate level for your body, maintaining your deep abdominal recruitment throughout, and a neutral spine… Remember to breathe!

Feel the difference, move differently, and look more balanced.

Your Whole Self
This weekend I have taken time out to be with my family. Once I had finished teaching on Saturday lunch time we packed up the car, collected my sister and brother-in-law and headed to Ely, Cambridgeshire to see my brother and sister-in-law.

When we all get together we are quite a loud bunch, we all talk at the same time, sharing memories and reminding each of our shared lives and experiences and we laugh a lot.

I am the only one of us still working as they have all retired and have a bit more available time, but even though we could only stay overnight, due to me getting back in time to prepare for the week ahead, it still felt important to me to make this happen and have some quality time with them.

I suppose my point of sharing this with you is to express the importance of spending time with loved ones. Sometimes even when it feels like we have no time, it is vital we make the time. There is nothing that is more important than this.

All classes are running normally this week, all in their correct venues, on the correct days, and at their correct times. Phew! That's a rare treat these days...

Book a Catchup

If you know you will have to miss a class in your course for any reason, and would like to book a space in another class instead, just follow the link to book it. Our Glamourous Assistant Karen runs the Catchups system, and this link is the quickest, most direct means (it's even faster than emailing her!) of letting Karen know.

Simply tell us the class you will miss and — most important — please give us as many alternatives as possible. If you only give us one alternative, we cannot guarantee you will get a Catchup.

Please also let us know if you will miss your class but don't want a Catchup — the whole Catchup system relies on knowing when spaces will occur.

Finally, please don't just tell your class Pilates Coach you will be missing a class, as your Coach is not aware of Catchups spaces and has no means of registering your space. Karen needs to know, and the link here (it's also at the bottom of our website too) is the best way to let Karen know.
