Up Tight and Outta Sight

The Jane Thomas Pilates Newsletter
Hello
There's a lot of news in this week's Newsletter, so please take the time to read through carefully.

Firstly, thank you to everyone who attended the Pelvic Floor Health seminar Up Tight and Outta Sight led by the marvellous Cherry Baker.

It was a hugely successful seminar and everyone who attended has learnt so much about how important it is to invest some time into helping the pelvic floor stay healthy and functional.

I love putting on these events for our JTP family, you invest in us and we invest in you, your health and your wellbeing. PLUS we raised £277 for the National Association for Hospice at Home — congratulations everyone for choosing to make a difference.
Email Woes, Again...
Next thing is that I need to tell everyone that we are — again — having severe difficulties getting some emails through to some people with some email addresses. Not every email, and not every email address. Let me explain...

The issue appears to be with any of the email services under the Microsoft banner — Hotmail, Outlook, Live, or MSN. If you have an email address based on any of these Microsoft email services, then you might be involved.

What is happening is that some of our emails are being put into your junk mail folders — not all of our emails. For example you might be seeing our weekly Newsletter (like this one), but not getting emails from Karen, Keith, or myself. Alternatively, you might be getting the personal emails, but not the Newsletter. Sometimes, we can be in an ongoing email conversation with someone, and all of a sudden one of our emails is treated as junk. As you can imagine, this is frustrating for us, as we never know if someone has received an email from us until we get a reply.

The answer is for you to locate the junked emails, and mark them as Not Junk, or Trust them. Adding us to your contacts list is also a good idea. You probably won't be able to do this from a phone, or tablet, or your computer's email program, as the junk mail folder there may not hold all emails that have been delegated as junk. Instead, you will likely need to do this on your computer, logging in to your email account through a web browser.

Sorry about the bother if you've been affected, but the matter is totally out of our control, and is a local issue with those email services. Hopefully if enough of the people affected mark our emails as Trusted or Not Junk, the email services doing this to our emails will get the message.

Summer Classes
This week is the first of our Summer Timetable of Pilates classes.

If you haven't already, remember that you do need to book your Pilates classes over the summer. Please don't just turn up expecting your class to be running, as you might get there to a locked door with no class running, or a full class with no space for you.

The Summer Timetable is necessary because everyone — including our fabulous team of Pilates Coaches — have holidays. So not every class is running, all the time. Check the Calendar below to see if your class is running, and make sure you have booked...

Exercise Of The Week
So of course in keeping with the seminar, I am focusing on your Pelvic Floor this week in the Exercise of the Week for you to practise.

This is a single knee drop, with the focus on recruiting pelvic floor rather than deep abdominals, although there will be a deep connection when the pelvic floor is recruiting and working.

The aim with a knee drop is to keep the lower back completely still on the mat when moving the knee out to the side. Work at the appropriate level for your body. Work towards doing 10 minutes of pelvic floor exercise a day, but remember that it doesn’t have to be done in one sitting you can do a few minutes at a time and spread those minutes out throughout the day.

Feel the difference, move differently, and look more balanced.

Your Whole Self
Consistency is the name of the game this week.

As some of you know who attend my classes I have been having some problems with my knees, one of them in particular, and as it is 14 years ago since I had my first op on my right knee, I think the issues I have been experiencing have been long overdue.

In fact from the diagnosis I had all those years ago post op, I consider myself very lucky to have had relatively few problems with it since. So I was quite concerned when my knee was swollen, painful to move, and putting a holt to my beloved running.

I decided I was going to stop running for a while, in fact I more or less decided that I would have to stop completely, but I would mix up my exercise. I got on my static bike for about 10/15 minutes every other day, I did  some of my HIIT workouts (also 10 minutes in duration) on the days I didn’t cycle, walked (instead of running) 3 times a week … and consistently, every day, did my Pilates. I also iced my knee every night after I had finished teaching, and also following the ice, I put heat on it.

After approximately 6 weeks, the swelling has gone down, I have so much more movement, and I went for a short run twice last week! I am very happy and grateful, but I want to say how thankful I am for my Pilates — it was Pilates that helped me to recover from my knee ops before, and it has been the consistency of my Pilates practise that has helped me this time. I have done other kinds of exercise and mixed it up, but I truly believe that Pilates has always been my consistent carer. Thank you Joseph!

We start the Summer Timetable this week — so make sure you check the Calendar above to see if your class is on. And make sure you book your summer classes.

Most of the classes on the Calendar above are Summer Timetable classes, but some of them are Catchups from classes that were postponed due to illness and venue closures etc.

Don't turn up expecting a class if it's not on. And please remember to book your summer classes if you've not already done so.

Book a Catchup

If you know you will have to miss a class in your course for any reason, and would like to book a space in another class instead, just follow the link to book it. Our Glamourous Assistant Karen runs the Catchups system, and this link is the quickest, most direct means (it's even faster than emailing her!) of letting Karen know.

Simply tell us the class you will miss and — most important — please give us as many alternatives as possible. If you only give us one alternative, we cannot guarantee you will get a Catchup.

Please also let us know if you will miss your class but don't want a Catchup — the whole Catchup system relies on knowing when spaces will occur.

Finally, please don't just tell your class Pilates Coach you will be missing a class, as your Coach is not aware of Catchups spaces and has no means of registering your space. Karen needs to know, and the link here (it's also at the bottom of our website too) is the best way to let Karen know.
