Spring is nearly here

The Jane Thomas Pilates Newsletter
Hello
Goodness me it is nearly the end of January!

I feel like the month has flashed past and in some ways I am quite pleased, not because I am wishing my life away, but because it seems to have been a particularly dark, grey, wet January.

Now I don’t mind a bit of cold weather, I quite like getting all wrapped up in cozy sweaters and scarves and hats and heading out for some fresh air, but I am not too keen on greyness and rain. When we had the snow last Sunday it was lovely, and even better in that it disappeared in a day so didn’t really cause too many problems in terms of travelling around and getting too and from places, but the rain that then followed was just a little bit dismal.

As I write this week’s newsletter the sun is out and it is blue sky above, it is a little bit fresh and cool, but actually the brightness of the day makes up for that … and this is what we want more of, so bring on February!
Have a fantastic week folks — keep looking, moving and feeling great.

Exercise Of The Week
Two videos to work on this week, the first is showing a pelvic tilt, which is useful if you have any stiffness/tightness in the lumbar spine — this move is here for you. It is a gentle way of opening up the vertebrae  and getting a small range of mobility into the lower back.

It is also the first part of a shoulder bridge, so if you feel it is a challenge to achieve the peeling effect of the spine as you lift it from the floor, or you have a problem with the replacement of the spine, then practise the pelvic tilt first for a few repetitions before then going into a full shoulder bridge movement.

Once you've mastered that, here is the full shoulder bridge movement.

Work at the appropriate level for your body. I should stress that if you have any fusion in your lumbar spine then the pelvic tilt is not a suitable exercise, and the shoulder bridge needs to be modified to avoid the flexion sequence of the movement.

Feel the difference, move differently, and look more balanced.

Your Whole Self
Five things to consider this week, all very important to me and how I live my life.

1 I want to Keep Learning — something which happens to me daily, as I work with bodies and minds. Everyone is an individual and even though symptoms might be shared, treatment and care of those symptoms have to be appropriate to every individual — one size does not fit all, therefore I keep learning more and more so that I can adapt and develop.

2 I want to Take Notice — listening to my class participants is key to how I care. I observe and watch how we move. I want to listen to what people say, I want to notice their faces, their smiles, their frowns.

3 I want to Connect — I constantly work on making connections with everyone I meet, whether this be in a class or just in general life, I love to connect. I want to encourage a connection between mind and body, and I want to make my connections count.

4 I want to Give — I want to share and I want to give, I want to give energy, I  want to give compassion, I want to give heart and soul.

5 I need to Be Active — this isn’t just about movement. I feel Being Active encompasses all of the above, I want to keep active in my learning, I want to actively take notice, I want to actively connect, and I want to actively give.

I don’t always get all of this right, I am not perfect, I am perfectly imperfect in fact, but they are themes that figure heavily in my life, and themes I want to keep working on.

Book a Catchup

If you know you will have to miss a class in your course for any reason, and would like to book a space in another class instead, just follow the link to book it. Our Glamourous Assistant Karen runs the Catchups system, and this link is the quickest, most direct means (it's even faster than emailing her!) of letting Karen know.

Simply tell us the class you will miss and — most important — please give us as many alternatives as possible. If you only give us one alternative, we cannot guarantee you will get a Catchup.

Please also let us know if you will miss your class but don't want a Catchup — the whole Catchup system relies on knowing when spaces will occur.

Finally, please don't just tell your class Pilates Coach you will be missing a class, as your Coach is not aware of Catchups spaces and has no means of registering your space. Karen needs to know, and the link here (it's also at the bottom of our website too) is the best way to let Karen know.
