Half way through the year and it's a good time to look back and see if you had any goals at the start of the year that you wanted to achieve, and if so have you already achieved, or are you on the right road towards achieving OR have your goals changed?
The goals could
be anything from visiting a different country, changing career, moving house, moving location, changing behaviour, learning a new skill …
OR you might be taking the first steps towards making bigger changes, bigger decisions, such as making plans towards retiring from work, which for some people is a huge step towards a very different lifestyle.
However, maybe you didn’t set any expectations for 2018, maybe you are able to live
each day without thinking too far ahead of what you want to do or where you want to be. You may be able to live totally in the moment, not letting the future play too big a part in what you do today … If this is you, I envy that ability.
In a week when one of my friends died, I recognise the need to be "expectation free”. As it was exactly 12 months ago when she was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour, which was terminal, all of her expectations as to how
she would spend her retirement years were suddenly thrown away. She had just turned 60 and was looking forward to a change of lifestyle, but possibly not the change that was suddenly presented to her. It was a case of one day at a time, and what would be would be, no expectations but being in that moment, enjoying that moment, being thankful for that moment.
Having thought about this, a balance can be found. Have your plan, have your expectations but recognise that
everything is temporary, at the same time as working towards your aims and goals for your life, ensure that every moment of getting there is enjoyed, if your progress is halted in some way, you may need to change direction, but be thankful for the change, as it will send you down a better route, giving you different experiences, and different expectations, but ultimately enjoy how you get there because every moment of every day is taking you there.
