I thought this week I would give you an insight into one of my days as a Pilates teacher. I am not going to tell you which day it is … but some of you will know!
I started this day with a group matwork class, opened up, getting the kit out, class participants arriving and catching me up with anything that may affect them in class, also chatting to those attending as a Catchup — sometimes if I haven’t taught someone before I need to know a bit about them to make sure I take good care of them throughout the session. Then I start to teach, giving modifications to individuals where appropriate, checking everyone is ok, getting the most out of the
session.
Then I fall over … ok so this doesn’t always happen but it did on this day, in this class.
When I am in this venue, I am constantly telling everyone to be careful when moving around the room, be careful when stepping onto the mats as the floor is slippy … one of those occasions when I should be listening to my own advice.
Anyway, I did the classic thing, sort of slid down and landed on my bottom. Thankfully, I have a well-padded bottom, something which funnily enough me and the class had already shared a giggle about earlier in the session. So my well-padded bottom helped me out here as I landed on this so it made for a good cushion. I also did the classic thing of hoping that nobody noticed … don’t think I quite got away with that one, as there was a little audible gasp from the class … just the back row at
least.
I very professionally, stayed down on the floor as I was next to one of the participants and proceeded to help her with the leg movement I was teaching at the time, keeping the class moving, as if nothing had happened. However, I had to share because of the … little audible gasp from the back row!
Fortunately, I was ok, the class continued through to its conclusion without further ado, and we shared more laughs, and worked hard with the exercises. I continued to help with adaptations for some clients making sure that everyone was working appropriately for their body. It was all fine, and everyone was lovely and helped me pack away … they always do … it wasn’t just because I had a fall.
I went on to teach at the Studio for the rest of the day, no falls, no slips, lots of laughs, lots of good work being done to keep bodies healthy and moving. Every time I sat down and since then when I have sat down, I feel a little tender … and I am reminded of my Tuesday … oops!
