Many of you completed our Pilates Class Survey from last week’s Newsletter, so we have some great ideas of how popular our current online classes and possible face-to-face classes are in the short term.
Thanks so much to everyone who completed the survey — it is really going to help guide us as we return to some semblance of “normal” following the disruption of Covid-19.
The main results of our Pilates Class Survey are:
- The vast majority of you prefer our online Pilates classes and want to continue doing them, even if/when face-to-face classes restart in the future
- Lots of you — still a majority — also wish to do both face-to-face and online classes together
- A smaller number of you prefer face-to-face classes only.
So, I’m happy to confirm two things… First, online classes will definitely continue — in the short-term and in the long-term. I’ve been thrilled to find out that most of you find the community we’ve built up in online classes to be of benefit and fun, and it’s my intention to keep this community spirit going for everyone.
Second, we are aiming to restart some face-to-face classes very soon. Depending on how popular these preliminary face-to-face classes and the associated venues are, then other classes and other venues will hopefully follow. But face-to-face classes come with a caveat… Face-to-face classes are totally dependent on the Government’s Covid regulations, and if the
regulations change for the worse, then face-to-face classes will have to be cancelled again.
My thoughts are that these face-to-face classes will initially be in these three venues — Rempstone Village Hall, Rosebery Street Medical Centre, and Old Woodhouse Hall — as these are the first I have risk-assessed and I know we can make Covid-Secure to meet the Government’s Covid regulations for indoor group exercise classes.
If you haven’t completed the survey and wish to have your say here is the link … it isn’t too late.
Let's look at the mind/body connection.
This is regularly used by Pilates teachers in their class teachings because of the principles of Pilates practice of concentration, precision and focus.
The mind/body connection is massive, and often underestimated. What is in the mind shows up in the body, and what is happening in the body shows up in the mind.
What hasn’t worked, or doesn’t work for us disrupts our physiology not just our minds. For example if we feel:
- Low energy
- Pain or stiffness
- Hunger
- Sleepless
- Dehydrated
- Low mood
- Heaviness when we move
this can often be connected to something that has happened which has disrupted our thoughts and feelings.
One of the main things we can work on for our mind/body connection is our breath. In my classes over the last week I have focused on finding our breath and I have been using my Be Activated practice to help us.
Our brain’s survival requires that we breathe, but we rarely spend time thinking about it. Think about this though, if we feel cold, anxious, nervous … it affects our breath. So as we head into this week, I am setting you a challenge to spend a few moments every day to be still and focus on your breath. The breath centres the mind and body, calms the mind and body, and brings us to a place of strength.
My Mindset Matters introduction course will be starting from Saturday 29th May. Further details will be sent out shortly.

Single knee opening … not a traditional Joseph Pilates exercise, more a pre-pilates exercise that is used in class to challenge mobility of the hips. It also challenges stability of the pelvis and the lower back.
It is actually preparation for leg circles. If you can stabilise with a knee opening then its possible to develop that into a full circle. Sometimes we use it with a shoulder bridge, sometimes we use it whilst lying on the side … but here we are lying on our backs.
We use the gluteus medius, piriformis which are important muscles for free movement in the hip joint, but also for the lower spine.
Work mindfully and at the appropriate level for your body, keep away from pain.
Have a great week everyone — keep moving, and keeping safe!
Jane xx
