How’s your Ego doing?
We all have one … Or two … Or three!! And our Ego can play funny tricks on us, making us believe things about ourselves by making up stories based on our life experiences.
If we recognise patterns of behaviour in ourselves, thoughts and feelings, that are a little bit self-destructive and self-critical, then they are often due to one of our Egos popping up and telling us these stories.
I get really fed up with my egos and I am working on disassociating myself from them, not because I want to get rid of them totally, I just don’t want them popping up so often. Because when they do, I feel a bit stuck, as if I can’t move forward, and I’m tired of feeling like that. So one of the things to do is to give them a name. For example, Dan the
Doubtful is always butting in for me, and I am working on ‘shutting him up’ and not opening the door to him so often. I can hear him telling me this story “you can’t do that …” “it won’t ever work for you because …” “I don’t think that was very good …” and “I don’t think that will work ...”
Often our Egos are to do with our self-confidence and self-worth, and they will influence our thoughts and our feelings and our behaviour.
Think about your egos, what stories do they make up for you based on your experiences, and how do they affect your behaviour? Is it time to do something about them because they are keeping you stuck in a place where things do not feel good?
You can make a change. Start by recognising your egos and what they do to you. Ask yourself is it real, or is it my ego making up this story? Give it a name to start the process of disassociation, and then accept, acknowledge and be curious about what you can do to move from feeling stuck with those stories, to feeling free to move on.
